Primary school pupils prepare for their next steps with Rocket into the Future
03 June 2016
Youth Connexions delivered the careers group work course Rocket into the Future across the whole spring term in The Grange Junior School, Letchworth Garden City. The module introduces children in years 5 and 6 to the choices ahead, and starts them thinking about their skills, aspirations and opportunities.
The school commissioned Youth Connexions to run 24 group sessions. The programme involves a variety of activities including team building, discussion groups, feedback sessions and creative exercises. There were talks from employers, and pupils explored what subjects are important for future jobs. They built a folder of personalised information that they could use to explore further at home with their families, and each received a certificate at the end of the course.

For the year 6 pupils, this was their final year in junior school and they were able to discuss how they felt about moving on. Many were able to meet the Youth Connexions Personal Adviser attached to their future secondary school.
Here are some of the participants’ comments:
“I have learned what I need to be good at to achieve what I want to be in the future.”
“I think it was amazing!”
“I learnt that it doesn’t matter if you didn’t win the rocket contest, but it’s all about teamwork.”
“I have learnt that everyone has different feelings about moving on.”
