First Aid Training wins Councillor’s Support
15 October 2015
Twenty young people from South Oxhey are delighted to have secured support for an Emergency First Aid course, thanks to their persistence and the support of County Councillor Joan King.

The sparkling newly refurbished facilities at South Oxhey YouthZone
The group of young people all attend the Youth Connexions youth project at the newly refurbished YouthZone Centre at South Oxhey. They suggested the idea of a First Aid course to their Youth Connexions Youth Worker as they felt there was a need for this life skill in the community. A trainer was sourced, and each young person agreed to pay £20 towards the cost of the training – which leads to a qualification in Emergency First Aid at Work. This still left a funding shortfall of £250. However, not fazed by this, and encouraged by their Youth Worker, the young people wrote an email to County Councillor Joan King requesting support from her locality budget.
Much to their delight, County Councillor King responded almost immediately saying that she would be pleased to help, and was impressed by the young people’s plans. As one young person, Rosie, wrote to the Councillor, “We have all lived in South Oxhey our whole lives but have never had an opportunity like this. This would be a great experience as we want to go to university in the future.”

These young people took part in a similar First Aid course to the one the South Oxhey team will do
The course will be run every Monday evening at YouthZone over a period of 6 weeks starting in November. The young people can’t wait for their training to begin , and residents living in South Oxhey can look forward to having a number of local young people trained to help them, should the need arise!
